Yam Cake or Or Kuih in Hokkien (Yam = Or and Cake = Kuih) is quite popular in Malaysia and Singapore.  Yam Cake is actually a steamed cake made from yam pieces, dried prawns and rice flour.

The Yam cake is topped with deep-fried shallots, spring onions, chilies and dried prawns. It is commonly served with a chili dipping sauce. This Nice and Delicious Yam Cake is the right choice when you have a tea break.

Ingredients :

For the cake or kuih :

  • 1 ½ bowls of diced into 1-2 cm cubes of yam
  • 1 bowl of rice flour
  • 2 tablespoons of wheat starch
  • 2 bowls of water
  • ½ – ¾ bowl of dried shrimps
  • 5 of finely chopped of shallots
  • 1 teaspoon of five-spice powder
  • ½ teaspoon of salt
  • ½ teaspoon of white pepper

For the topping of theyam cake :

  • Some deep-fried shallots
  • Some finely slices of spring onions
  • Some finely slices of red chilies
  • Some finely chopped and fried of dried-shrimps

Instructions :

  • Prepare a pan. The pan is heated over medium high heat and the onions and dried shrimps are fried until you smell the nice aroma for more or less 3-5 minutes.
  • The cubed yam is put into the pan and it is fried with the onion and dried shrimp mixture until they become brown.
  • Prepare a bowl. In the bowl, the rice flour, wheat starch and water are mixed and they are stirred until they form a smooth paste. Just make sure that there are no lumps in the mixture.
  • The flour mixture is put into the pan carefully and slowly. It is then stirred until everything forms a thick paste.
  • The salt, pepper and five-spice powder are put into the pan and they are mixed properly.
  • The mixture is poured into a heat proof bowl or plate and it is steamed over high heat for more or less 45 minutes or until it is cooked.
  • The deep-fried shallots, chopped spring onions, sliced chilies and chopped dried shrimp are sprinkled to serve The Nice and Delicious Yam Cake. It is also strongly recommended to serve The Nice and Delicious Yam cake with some chili sauce on the side.

Recipe Note: The wheat starch is used to make the Yam Cake softer in texture. But, if you happen not to have or you can’t find the wheat starch, you may change it with the same amount of corn starch.
